The recent changes in curriculum and assessment in Ireland display a conscious effort by forming bodies, to link transitions throughout the Irish education system. Andrea's experience of further education and QQI assessment procedures strengthen her ability in understanding these new changes as they are are similar to the QQI model, through their focus on continuous assessment, formative assessment and feedback.

As a result of experience, training and research, Andrea is well versed her understanding of formative (assessment for learning) and summative (assessment of learning) procedures. She is pro-active in her approaches to implement differentiated formative strategies to suit all learners in her classroom.

Andrea is up to date with the new Junior Cycle curriculum, principles and key skills, as well as the specifics of the Visual Art component. She is also on track with other events happening within the art curriculum, with the upcoming review of Leaving Certificate art programme and is familiar with the draft specification.

As a whole, the teacher views the new changes to Irish curriculum as being very positive for the progression of learner education. The focus on wellbeing for students is integral in it's response to the increasing anxieties young people are face with today.Junior Cycle L2LP's and short courses offer inclusive access to a functional education for students with special education needs, as well as LCA for Senior Cycle. The focus of instilling key skills for learner progression is a worthy addition to the curriculum. Learners will become more actively engaged in their learning and will learn from a curriculum that is most applicable to their lives moving forward.

Curriculum and Assessment

As part of her teaching placement, Andrea completed the JCT whole school training day and The Visual Art for Junior Cycle training day. Both days offered informed insight into classroom based assessments for visual art and types of formative assessment to be used across the curriculum for Junior Cycle. An additional element to the PME at NCAD was a module in Curriculum and Assesment led by Anne Gallagher, post-graduate lecturer at NCAD. The module was assessed with a summative written assignment.
