"Our task is to educate [our students'] whole being, so they can face the future. We may not see the future, but they will and our job is to help them make something of it" - Ken Robinson

Andrea's style of pedagogy is embedded in the constructivist theory of education and learning. Constructivism is a learning theory found in psychology which explains how people might acquire knowledge and learn. It therefore has direct application to education. The theory suggests that humans construct knowledge and meaning from their experiences. Learners are active (not passive) in their learning experiences.

The teacher continually strives to implement constructivist learning theories through her approaches and strategies to teaching with a student centred approach. Andrea views learning as a continual 'lifelong' process, that not only takes place in the school environment, but in the 'real life' experiences of individual learners. In addition she believes that learners should continually build on their prior knowledge, and draw from their 'real life' experiences to make what they learn in school  both meaningful and purposeful to their future and everyday lives.

Andrea actively encourages participation and group work, encouraging peer learning in her lessons, which has proven a successful approach from experience. Collaboration for planning and team-teaching are considered as positive practices by the teacher. She is an advocate for special education and has ample experience teaching students with special education needs (SEN) in a variety of settings. The teacher focuses on inclusive practice when planning for all learners in her lessons, using the guidelines and continuum of support from the DES.

"Art has a role in education of helping children become like themselves, instead of more like everyone else"

- Sydney Gurewitz Clemen

This is a philosophy that drives Andrea's passion as an educator. The teacher aims to simultaneously encourage individuality and diversity through thematic approaches to art making and communication. Art has the ability to explore individuality and encourage individual learners to reach their full potential, whatever that may be. Recognising that all learners are different and receive the curriculum and learning in different ways, and it is our role as teachers to provide and plan for all learning styles and abilities in our classroom.
